Australian and New Zealand passengers of a liner anchored for several days off Montevideo after the appearance of cases of coronavirus, will be repatriated Thursday by plane, announced Tuesday the Uruguayan government. "The government authorized the landing and take-off of a charter flight on April 9. It is a medical aircraft chartered by cruise ship Aurora (Expeditions) to repatriate Australian and New Zealand passengers from the liner Greg Mortimer, " the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

An evacuation operation made possible "after intense discussions and very close cooperation with the Australian government , " said on his Twitter account the head of diplomacy of the South American country, Ernesto Talvi. Earlier, Australian cruise ship Aurora Expeditions, owner of the ship, said that Australian passengers would be repatriated this week by plane.

The Greg Mortimer , flying the flag of the Bahamas and carrying some 200 passengers and crew members, has been stranded off the Uruguayan capital for more than a week. The number of cases listed on board rose Tuesday from 81 to 128, according to the company. The fate of European passengers - including five British - and American has however not been specified. They "must wait until their test (coronavirus) is negative" for their evacuation to be organized, which could be done by a flight to Sao Paulo, Brazil, then to join their respective countries, said Aurora Expeditions.
