State aid has not yet been decided, as Lufthansa is slashing its fleet in a corona shock. It is still unclear how many employees will lose their jobs.

Frankfurt / Cologne (dpa) - In response to the Corona crisis, the Lufthansa Group wants to significantly reduce its fleet. The company also announced that the flight operations of its Cologne subsidiary Germanwings will not be resumed. The unions had already feared this.

The company announced that the other consequences would be discussed with the social partners. At the core company Lufthansa, 18 long-haul aircraft and eleven medium-range jets are expected to remain on the ground. Among them are six aircraft from the Airbus A380 super jumbo, which should go back to the manufacturer Airbus from 2022 anyway. The long-haul offer of Eurowings will also be significantly reduced, as the board has decided.

In addition, Lufthansa announced that Eurowings' goal of bundling flight operations into one unit, which had been set before the crisis, will now be implemented more quickly. "Germanwings flight operations will be terminated," it said.

The aim of all employees continues to be to offer as many people as possible to continue working within the Lufthansa Group. For this purpose, new employment models should be negotiated. The unions had opposed a hasty end to the Germanwings, for which no agreement had been reached to increase the short-time allowance.

The Group also announced aircraft decommissioning for the other subsidiaries, Brussels, Austrian and Swiss. At the same time, all leases with other airlines were canceled.

The board of directors does not expect the aviation industry to return quickly to the pre-Corona level. According to him, it will take months for global travel restrictions to be lifted completely and years for global air travel to return to pre-crisis levels.

Lufthansa did not provide any information on possible state aid.
