Minsk (dpa) - After criticism of an inadequate handling of the corona pandemic, President Alexander Lukashenko has experts in the World Health Organization (WHO) assess the situation in Belarus (Belarus).
"But there is absolutely no disaster here," said Lukashenko in Minsk on Tuesday, according to the Belta agency. There is an increase in the number of infections. "Thank God it's not like an avalanche." WHO experts should show citizens that they are safe in the country, that the government is not hiding or hiding anything, Lukashenko said.
As of Tuesday, around 860 coronavirus cases were officially registered in the authoritarian ex-Soviet republic. 13 corona infected people have died. The numbers have risen rapidly in the Eastern European country in recent days.
The leadership in Minsk was heavily criticized nationally and internationally because football matches continued to be played in front of a large audience and hardly any measures were taken to contain them. Lukashenko talked the problem down as "psychosis".
The head of state also demanded that the government provide significantly more protective clothing for the staff in the clinics. In addition, compliance with the quarantine measures should be monitored more closely, said Lukashenko.
