Where is Daniel Ortega? 2:00
(CNN Spanish) - The Nicaraguan in the World initiative - created by exiled citizens in the United States, Mexico, Central America and Europe after the 2018 anti-government protests - demanded this Tuesday the creation of a national action committee against the covid-19, before what they consider to be the ineffectiveness of the government of President Daniel Ortega, who has been absent for 26 days, although his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, affirms daily that it is Ortega who is in charge of the government's actions due to the emergency.
"Their behavior in the face of this pandemic contravenes the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), since in addition to painfully promoting the spread of covid-19, it denies access to public information and prohibits health personnel from using protective equipment ”, Pointed out the statement that was read in an internet transmission.
The exiles point to the government to appear to be non-existent and to promote massive events in tourist centers.
Until April 7, the Ministry of Citizen Power for Health (Minsa) reports 6 positive cases of covid-19, including one deceased, two recovered, three hospitalized and eight under medical observation. The Minsa insists that the reported cases are imported and there is no community transmission of the disease.
The government has not announced the closure of borders, preventive quarantine or restrictions on the mobility of people from countries where the WHO has reported cases. The government announced Easter holidays for staff and students of public colleges and universities from April 4 to 20, but has not canceled classes. The Ministry of Tourism and mayors maintain the call for summer activities.
The Nicaraguan in the World initiative requests the audit of the delegation of the Pan American Health Organization in the country and the government to verify their actions in the face of the pandemic and to proceed according to the law.
The exiles announced that they will hold meetings with executives of the Central American Integration System and the OAS to discuss this emergency situation in the country.
Finally, they reiterated the demand for the release of some 70 opposition protesters, whom the government considers to be common criminals, who, they say, can contract the disease due to the overcrowded conditions in which they are kept in prison.
