The Corona is a reminder to prepare for the next crisis

The Corona virus has shaken the State of Israel economically, mentally and nationally like most countries in the world. But the most burning question in the face of the crisis is actually: Is it possible for the State of Israel to sleep peacefully at night after the crisis ends? By now it is clear to all experts, unequivocally, that we are right in the realm of another crisis - and that is to mean a strong earthquake in the African Syrian crisis, at least 6 on the Richter scale. The previous earthquake of 6.25 occurred in 1927 when the focus was on the North Sea.

True, while the Corona is now centered on everyone's news and resources, it should serve as a reminder - how to prepare for another possible crisis. Statistics, annoying like her, indicate that once a century there is a strong earthquake in Israel. This is a statue that has "knocked like a clock" for thousands of years, and has caused serious and documented disasters in the area. The thing is, if in the past most residents of the country lived in low-rise houses, then since the establishment of the state, there are large and old buildings throughout the fault from Eilat in the south, through Jerusalem and Beit Shean to Kiryat Shmona in the north.

These are tens of thousands of buildings built in the 1950s and 1960s, during the great immigration to Israel, and their current physical condition is far from satisfactory. This simple truth underlies many debates in the Knesset and in the government, and it also pushed for the implementation of the 38-year plan. At the same time, it was decided to renovate public buildings along the fault and away from it to prevent the collapse of municipalities, schools, community centers and other public buildings.

But a simple perusal of the state comptroller's report for 2017-2018 shows that, after all the warnings, committees, decisions and laws, Israel simply does not suffer from this kind of earthquake, which is difficult to overstate in describing its implications for the economy, infrastructure and civilian security. , Which landed on the state in a relatively short warning of a few months, earthquakes in the area are completely cyclical, predictable and devastating. Israel's.

So how come we are not ready, that Israel is in the real range of earthquake, with tens of thousands of old buildings, after state comptroller reports and we all sleep well at night? Sadly, the conclusion is very bleak: It's hard to learn from history when it comes to money. , And mobilize the forces and resources to be prepared for the next crisis, before we are surprised - if we are surprised.
