During the occupation movement in 2014, seven police officers allegedly beat Zeng Jianchao, a former Citizen Party member, at a corner in Timma Park, Admiralty. They were found guilty of assault causing physical injury in the District Court and were sentenced to two years in prison. The Appeals Tribunal last year sentenced two of the police officers to appeal, while the conviction appeals of the other five police officers were dismissed, but the sentence was reduced to 15 to 18 months. They applied for permission to appeal to the final court today (7th) as a final attempt. The appellant's lawyer questioned the authenticity of the beating videos and the judges in the trial tried to use the wrong legal standards. However, the judges refused to grant the appeal permission and the five policemen's final appeal must stop.

The five police officers currently appealing are Huang Zucheng, Liu Zhuoyi, Bai Rongbin, Chen Shaodan and Guan Jiahao. Among them, Huang Zucheng was the chief inspector, Liu Zhuoyi was the senior inspector, Bai Rongbin was the sergeant, and the other two were police officers. They were accused of attacking Zeng Jianchao on Longhui Road on October 15, 2014. In addition, Chen Shaodan was also convicted of one ordinary assault, alleging that he received an indoor assault at the Central Police Station on the same day. All five criminal police officers have completed their sentences.

As for the other two police officers involved, Liu Xingpei and Huang Weihao, the Court of Appeals earlier ruled that the appeal was justified.

The case was originally scheduled for trial in February this year, but was postponed due to the outbreak of new coronary pneumonia.
