The number is staggering. In the last two weeks of March, some 10 million new unemployed workers in the United States signed up for benefits. Within a month they could be twice as numerous. According to the Labor Department, 65% of the jobs eliminated as of mid-March related to leisure and the hotel industry. The bar and restaurant waiter professions are the first to be affected.
Ethnic statistics, authorized in the United States, also reveal that unemployment initially rose almost twice as fast among Asians and African-Americans than among whites. Young people aged 20 to 24 are also the most affected age group.
The very first wave of unemployed workers is therefore made up of mostly unskilled workers. The most qualified, better paid, may ask for help in a second step. They have more savings than the others and are more confident in their ability to find
