Berlin - CSU leader Markus Söder * has by far the greatest support among the population of the possible chancellor candidates of the Union. According to a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency , 27 percent of those questioned would like the Bavarian Prime Minister to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) in the next federal election.
Far behind, the former Bundestag parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz with twelve and the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Armin Laschet with eight percent . Health Minister Jens Spahn has seven percent and foreign politician Norbert Röttgen only three percent . 43 percent of the respondents did not provide any information.

The backing for Söder, who recently broke a record by Edmund Stoiber, is particularly high among the voters of the CDU and CSU with 38 percent . For Merz there are 15 percent in this group, for Laschet 14 percent , for Spahn six percent and for Röttgen three percent .
The CDU usually has first access to the Union's candidature for chancellor. With Franz Josef Strauß (1980) and Edmund Stoiber (2002) there were also two CSU candidates for the Chancellor, both of whom lost the election.

In the YouGov survey, 30 percent of the respondents said that they would run for the government again after 16 years . 53 percent are against it, 17 percent did not provide any information.
At the end of February, only 21 percent wanted Merkel to continue, 64 percent declined. When she retired from the CDU chairmanship in October 2018, the 65-year-old had announced that she would not be available for another term in the Chancellery.
