"We cannot bury our dead", families in Ecuador 3:12

(CNN Spanish) - In the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, the Joint Task Force for the removal of bodies has begun to gradually bury those killed by covid-19 and other pathologies in one of the cemeteries enabled to alleviate the crisis created because of the pandemic.

According to the government, it is a dignified burial in which the bodies are deposited in one-person spaces with their identification so that family and friends can visit the place of burial once the emergency phase has passed.

Jorge Wated, leader of the Joint Task Force, told the press that the objective is to bury more than 100 bodies daily, out of the many that are now scattered in hospital morgues and refrigerated mobile containers.

In the last week alone, according to Wated, more than 1,300 bodies were collected from people who died for different reasons, many of them associated with respiratory problems.

The government created a web page for family members to know the exact location of the body of their loved ones in the churchyard. They can do it through the page http://www.coronavirusecuador.com by entering with the ID number or name of the deceased person.

On the other hand, the Emergency Operations Committee ordered that family members have 24 hours after notification to collect the body of a close friend who dies in a public hospital if their desire is to carry out a funeral in a particular way.

The dead that are not claimed within this period, the government will take charge of "burying them in a dignified, free and unipersonal way" in order to protect the health of the inhabitants.

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Environment reported that the prisoners of the Ambato city jail and other penitentiaries in the country are making wooden coffins for the deceased.

The coffins are mainly destined for the province of Guayas, the one most affected by the coronavirus, but they would also reach other parts of the country if necessary.

According to the Ministry, 700 meters of seized wood are being used for the task.

“We work to bring relief, to bring calm within these difficult times that we Ecuadorians are experiencing. That is why I have arranged for the seized wood to be donated to be able to build wooden coffins and to be able to donate to each of the relatives who have lost a loved one, ”said the Minister of the Environment, Juan DeHowitt Holguín.
