More than a million cases of contamination by the new coronavirus have been officially diagnosed in Europe, a little more than half of the world total, according to a count made by AFP on Wednesday at 10:30 am French time. With at least 1,003,284 cases, including 84,465 deaths, Europe is the continent most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. In total worldwide, 1,991,019 cases and 125,955 deaths have been recorded.

Spain (172,541 cases, 18,056 deaths), Italy (162,488, 21,067), France (143,303, 15,729) and Germany (127,584, 3,254) are the four countries officially counting more than 100,000 cases on their territory, while the United Kingdom (93.873, 12.107) is the one which currently registers the highest number of new cases daily.

This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with many countries now testing only those cases requiring hospital care.
