Berlin (dpa) - SPD general secretary Lars Klingbeil has accused the Prime Minister of Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, Markus Söder (CSU) and Armin Laschet (CDU), of attempting to profile themselves in the corona crisis.

The "Competition between Munich and Düsseldorf" is getting out of hand, said Klingbeil of the "Rheinische Post". "It sometimes seems like a cockfight for Merkel's legacy, in which the participants watch each other and compulsively try to be faster than the other." He found that dangerous and absolutely not appropriate for the situation. "The situation is far too serious for that."

Responsible crisis management is best done with unity, said Klingbeil. "What is therefore not helpful at all is the constant public profiling attempts by potential CDU and CSU chancellor candidates."

In Bavaria, for example, Söder had introduced exit restrictions to contain the coronavirus in front of the other federal states, thereby influencing the nationwide debate. Laschet, who is running for the CDU chairmanship, had positioned himself strongly in the debate about easing the corona measures. Söder had made it clear on several occasions that he currently had no ambitions to run for office as chancellor, and repeated this despite the good survey results in the Corona crisis.

However, the Union continues to record good polls. In the "Insa opinion trend" for the "Bild" newspaper, the CDU and CSU win a point together and thus reach 38.5 percent. The SPD loses one point and is in third place with 15 percent, behind the Greens. At 16 percent, these remain unchanged compared to the previous week. Neither did the other opposition parties move: the AfD is 10.5 percent, the left 7.5 percent and the FDP 7 percent. Both the grand coalition of Union and SPD and a black-green alliance would have a majority.
