"The suspension of repatriation of the deceased in their country of origin because of the epidemic is now combined with the lack of space dedicated to their worship in the cemeteries of France" , explains the association Tahara in the summary procedure (emergency procedure ) filed before the administrative court of Montreuil. "This situation causes great difficulties since the storage of the bodies of the deceased in overloaded cold rooms for several weeks is carried out in unworthy conditions. Religious rites cannot be performed on the deceased and their burial, supposed to be carried out as soon as possible, takes an abnormally long time , insists the association.

It therefore calls for "exceptional measures forcing municipal authorities to develop municipal and inter-municipal cemeteries". In this case, the Tahara association asked the mayor of Montreuil, in Seine-Saint-Denis, to allow the extension of its Muslim square. “Some towns in Seine-Saint-Denis, such as Villetaneuse, Pantin or Tremblay-en-France, play the game, in particular by accepting the deceased from other towns. But the funeral directors in the Montreuil sector are overwhelmed, ” according to the association's lawyer, Nabil Boudi.

"Normally, about 80% of the deceased are buried in their country of origin," recently told AFP the president of the French Council of Muslim Faith (CFCM) Mohammed Moussaoui. With the almost total suspension of repatriations abroad, "the crisis has come to reveal the lack of Muslim squares" in France, estimates Mohammed Moussaoui, who assesses these spaces dedicated to "about 600" , on 35,000 cemeteries.
