The President of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, assured that "no case of Covid-19 had been recorded" in the small poor archipelago of the Indian Ocean, contradicting claims by France, the former colonial power.

"No case of Covid-19 has been recorded in the three islands of the Union of the Comoros, thank God," said Azali Assoumani, during an intervention Wednesday before the new assembly resulting from the last legislative elections. Last week, the former French minister Dominique Voynet, patroness of the regional health agency of Mayotte, a French island located 70 km from the Union of the Comoros, announced that the death, in early April, of the grand mufti of Comoros was caused by infection with the new coronavirus.

"We know there is Covid-19 in the Comoros, but we do not know if there is a lot of it," said Dominique Voynet, statements that had caused a new spurt of political fever between the Comoros and the France.

Previously, it was the prefect of Mayotte, Jean-François Colombet, who had mentioned the case of a Covid-19 "imported" from the Comoros, angering the Comorian authorities. The Union of the Comoros is one of the few countries in the world not to have officially registered cases of Covid-19.
