NEW - Produced in France and launched in 2021, this small hybrid SUV of 4.18 m looks very promising.

He was to be one of the stars of the Geneva show canceled a few days before its opening to stem the spread of the coronavirus. He will undoubtedly be one of the stars of the rapidly growing segment B segment SUV. The Yaris Cross, that's his name, is a derivative of the fourth generation of the Yaris, the first deliveries of which are planned in the coming weeks. Like the new Toyota city car, it will be produced in France, on the Valenciennes site. But, to cross this crossover on the roads, it will be necessary to wait until the beginning of the year 2021.

Twenty-five years after being one of the pioneers in the mini SUV category with the Rav4 3-door, Toyota returns to a completely different context. This segment concentrates all the ambitions and energies of manufacturers, whether generalists and even certain specialists. The Yaris Cross should nevertheless be able to carve out a place of choice there. He will be able to count on an attractive style which confirms that the Japanese manufacturer is on the right track. The shapes mix the codes of the C-HR and the Rav4 with clothing and we find the leak of the typical roof cut from the first and the square wheel arches of the last Rav4. With a length of 4.18 meters, 240 mm longer than the Yaris, the Yaris Cross is in the first third of the category, while keeping its distance from the C-HR (4.36 m). It is thus 80 mm longer than the VW T-Cross but 50 mm shorter than the last Renault Captur. The Yaris SUV has a width of 1.76 m and a height of 1.56 m.

Sharing the TNGA-B platform of the last Yaris, its derivative incorporates many elements. Starting with its hybrid technology based on the 3-cylinder 1.5 liter associated with an 80 hp electric motor. If it is satisfied with an indirect injection, the thermal engine derived from the 4-cylinder 2 liter Corolla works according to the Atkinson cycle and has two variable camshaft settings. The cumulative power is 116 hp. Toyota claims CO2 emissions of less than 90 g / km for the two-wheel drive version, 100 g / km for the model with all-wheel drive thanks to an electric motor on the rear axle.

The lithium-ion battery is placed under the floor and does not encroach on the trunk. Its capacity is still unknown but Toyota has shown a video in which an ATV was standing (front wheel removed) after lowering the backrests of the seat. As for the dashboard, it shares many elements with that of the Yaris.

Toyota has planned to produce 150,000 units of its new SUV in a full year.
