More than ninety crew members of the Italian cruise ship Costa Atlantica, on a technical stopover in the Japanese port of Nagasaki, are infected with the coronavirus, representatives said on Friday, raising questions about the repatriation of these nationals strangers. Japanese authorities are busy screening about 290 of the 623 crew members on board, after one of them was confirmed this week to be carrying the coronavirus. The ship does not carry any passengers.

The high rate of infections makes authorities fear a possible overload of health services in the city in southwest Japan. According to the Kyodo news agency, Health Minister Katsunobu Kato said Friday that the crew members who tested negative would be repatriated, an announcement that welcomed representatives of Nagasaki.
