Tourism: "In Argelès-sur-Mer, we are in the dark"

INTERVIEW - Despite measures taken to try to limit the damage of the health crisis on the tourist sector, the summer season promises to be harsh for the municipality. Interview with its mayor, Antoine Parra.


LE FIGARO. - What are the consequences of Covid-19 in the tourist life of Argelès-sur-Mer?

Antoine PARRA. - They're huge. The whole economy of Argelès-sur-Mer depends directly or indirectly on tourism, a sector which employs around 2,500 people. Each year, we welcome up to 150,000 holidaymakers at the heart of the season, in August (800,000 tourists in total), more than ten times more than the number of inhabitants who live year-round in our port and seaside city: 10,000 people. Our tourist resort is the European capital of campsites with 52 establishments in the town. We also have a large hotel offer, rentals of apartments or private houses, not to mention the marina and green tourism in the Pyrenees which flow into the sea.
