The battle for memory of war

Prof. Udi LeBell

To understand the origins of the need for recognition of the war years in southern Lebanon as a war, one must go back to the 1990s. Mothers of warriors and cavaliers acted with the blood of their hearts to attribute to their victim, which they perceived as meaningless, meaningless. They demanded that those killed in southern Lebanon become the "last void" in which they died. They acted on behalf of their sons to evacuate the IDF from Lebanon and thus create a legacy for them. Kiryat Shmona, and may become another void in which he will not live.

The State of Israel has failed in conducting the discourse around the security zone no less than in conducting the war there. It allowed this discourse ("Lebanon = mud", "Lebanon = disaster") to shape what was happening on the ground: communicatively, but also militarily, Israel responded more to the discourse than initiated. Thus, the syndrome known as "self-fulfilling prophecy" was fulfilled as the martial theory began to illustrate mothers' claims. After all, in order to avoid cavalry, the warriors' orders to remain in positions, to avoid initiative - which did not give them the chance to thwart terror, and the fallen cannot be displayed due to shell fire - as part of combat spaces to create security for the residents of the north.

In 2000, the completion and significance were given to the space families: civilian activity led to the IDF's exit from Lebanon, preventing "casual loss" from other homes. That's why it ended 20 years later, the warriors were informed that they had not "just" been sent to their mission, Helena who allegedly had to refer to their mothers.

Now they will, and rightly, be granted their request, and years of fighting there will be declared war, and rightly framed as an era of courage, a necessary necessity for daily execution of the debilitating "weeding" of the kind that also occurs in Iraq and Afghanistan, Yemen or Syria. A time when "boots on the ground" outside the territories of Sisyphean, abrasive and tedious, work was required without which - as we well know today - tunnels were being excavated, and the hangars built by long-range missiles were being built. These are now depriving Israel of the free ability to wage war and ensure its security. Signals will rightly be awarded, set there and a representative military history written. The "Lebanon War" will begin with Operation Shalag, even though it looks different today than before: At military academies overseas, Israel is presented with its right as the pioneer of the countries that knew how to exit, defeat and defeat a terrorist organization and expel its base.

Defining the period as a war deserves, first and foremost, its spouses and their families. This recognition will minimize the divide between the left and the right within the "Lebanese family", as well as the SLA families and the terrorists - many of whom, it must be admitted - are a direct product of the withdrawal from the security zone. "Lebanon" is the fighting that has contributed most to the politicization of bereavement. The Israeli, and the binding of all its partners to one part of the war, which is essentially the "Lebanon War" - will initiate a significant social recovery process.
