Without new cases of coronavirus for a week, New Brunswick in the east of the country was the first province to relax on Friday, announcing the reopening of parks and beaches.

Province most affected by the pandemic, with more than half of the 2,781 deaths and 48,229 cases of coronavirus in Canada, Quebec announced Monday the reopening of its primary schools from May 11, but not before the 19 in Montreal, epicenter of the crisis in the country.

However, high schools and universities will remain closed until the end of August, said François Legault, Premier of Quebec. And the reopening of primary schools will only be "if and only if the situation" does not deteriorate by then, he insisted. Parents will also be free to send their children to class or not, said Quebec Minister of Education Jean-François Roberge.

The second most affected and populated province, Ontario also announced a "roadmap" for resuming certain activities. This province has seen a decrease in new cases for the past three days. The contagion will have to continue to weaken in the next two to four weeks before some companies are allowed to reopen, said Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario.

People will also be able to meet in small groups, especially in parks or for funerals.

"I fully understand that people are anxious to get back to work," said Ford. "Wait, we'll get there. What we don't want is for it to be premature to reopen the economy (...) and for the virus to come back. ”

The province of Saskatchewan (west), relatively unscathed by the epidemic, plans to revive its economy next week.

"We are a federation and we respect the authority of the provinces to make appropriate decisions for their citizens," said Justin Trudeau, in a press conference.

"I think people know how risky it is to reopen or resume activities too quickly, because we could lose all the gains that we have had with difficulty during these last weeks of confinement," he said. -he says.

"From one industry to another, from one region to another, the measures will be different to keep Canadians safe," said Mr. Trudeau, adding that he is "developing in partnership with the provinces, basic principles ”.

"We will be able to resume certain activities in the coming months, which will be less painful than this period of absolute confinement that we are experiencing," he added.

"But you have to be careful until you have either a vaccine or treatments that are the equivalent of a vaccine," he warned.
