Miesbach - finally visiting grandma or grandpa, mother, father or aunt in the retirement home - at the AWO senior center Inge-Gabert-Haus in Miesbach the relatives can do that now. Thanks to a newly built structure on the terrace of the café on the ground floor.

Residents of the Inge-Gabert-Haus can see their relatives again

The café is closed due to the corona protection measures, but now has a new purpose: At the open glass door to the terrace, one resident of the house can sit or stand and "receive" a visitor - this can be done three meters away on a bench, the "visitor square". In between is a light wooden frame made of pallets and boards, which thanks to carved boards in the right places is more reminiscent of a balcony than a barrier.

Rosemarie Holzapfel, director of the facility, is delighted that the residents can now see their relatives again - face to face, not just on a screen or on their cell phones. This eliminates a bit of tension and the offer is also being accepted diligently, she reports. "Relatives call when they would like to come over, and we then get our resident out of the room and bring him down."

The elderly can only leave their rooms to a very limited extent - only for small, accompanied “walks” in the hallways of the individual living areas. They have to do without any direct contact with each other, including eating together. But crab apple is full of praise for the elderly. "There is no whine in the house, they are all very reasonable." Even more than that. "They often say: 'Thank you for taking good care of us,'" reports the head of the home.

The elderly themselves would also pay great attention to their own protection, she reports. They would even wear a protective mask on the balconies in front of the rooms, which are separated from each other. So that the mood does not slip too much, "we come up with something every day," says Holzapfel. This includes, for example, handicraft offers or simply colorful flowers in the house. A shopping service provides residents with everything they need from outside - including crossword puzzles if desired.
