Buch am Buchrain – The “Buach bliahd” campaign enjoyed great popularity last year. This year there will be a new edition. BBV local chairman Michael Rappold is again distributing free flower seeds - also to citizens of pastettes.
In 2019, the farmer from Loiperding had carefully calculated when ordering his seeds. Today Rappold is still pleased with the response. In 2019 he was able to supply almost 30 households with his mix for colorful flower strips. The demand was higher than the stock. "The campaign was very helpful in raising people's awareness of their responsibility for nature and insects," the 36-year-old is convinced.
More demand than supply
Rappold, who will sit in the municipal council for the Bucher CSU from May, wants to counteract the death of insects in his home community and ensure that the bees find a greater variety of flowers in the region.
Since “Buach bliahd” had been so well received that some citizens no longer received any seeds, Rappold decided early to repeat the action. He ordered the flower seeds earlier - and in larger quantities. "I learned from my mistakes," he says with a laugh. This means that around 100 households can be supplied. One serving is suitable for an area of ten square meters. The seeds again contain "many bee-loving flowering plants" like sunflowers. Orange-yellow marigolds are new.
Great interest despite corona restrictions
The response is again very good and is at the previous year's level, reports Rappold. The BBV local chairman is surprised at the corona restrictions and people's concerns. "I thought maybe people were a little more reserved", he was all the more pleased about the high level of interest. Although the campaign officially runs through the BBV local association, Rappold pays the costs for the seeds privately. Buch citizens can order as long as stocks last. He is also happy to provide citizens of pastettes with free seeds.
The 36-year-old will deliver the first Bucher flower strip mixtures at the end of April. This is also the optimal time to sow them in the garden. Rappold points out that it is helpful to let the plants dry up and let them stand for the winter. "They then provide shelter for the bees and are a good insect hotel in winter."
Bonus for the most beautiful garden
As in 2019, the most beautiful garden will be awarded. The winner last year was Silke Pfister. A small jury with Rappold had decided. Pfister had distributed the seeds at the Pitzer pond. There she has been helping amphibians migrate toads for years in the spring. For their flowering area, Pfister received a gift basket with regional bee products: honey from the mayor and hobby beekeeper Ferdinand Geisberger, a beeswax candle made from pastettes and honey wine from Ötz. Until the end of the year, this year's “Buach bliahd” participants can send pictures of their colorful flower strips to the contact details below. The winner will be chosen in early 2021.
