Brazil surpassed the 5,000 dead mark for the new coronavirus on Tuesday after recording a record 474 deaths in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health.

With 5,017 deaths caused by Covid-19, the heaviest toll in Latin America, Brazil has already exceeded the number of deaths officially announced by China, where the epidemic emerged in late 2019.
