Coronavirus: California plans to start school “at the end of July or beginning of August”

California could advance the start of the school year by several weeks to compensate for the disruption caused by the closure of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic. "We recognize that there has been a loss in learning as a result of these disruptions," said Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday, explaining that plans to start school early, "as early as late July or early August," to make up for the delay .

The decision to reopen schools will depend in any event on the evolution of the pandemic in California and the changes necessary to adapt to the new situation, said the governor. Almost all of the state's schools, which welcome more than six million students in total, have been closed since mid-March. Distance education systems have been established in most cases.

Governor Newsom has not given a date or timetable for a gradual deconfinement of the most populous state in the country, prompting his fellow citizens to continue to scrupulously respect the rules of social distancing taken very early in the health crisis. However, he spoke of "weeks rather than months" for the start of the process. "It is not political considerations that will guide our decisions, they are not demonstrations or political pressure" but "science, data and public health" , once again insisted the Democratic Governor.
