As of today, the 2020 catalog of fines will come into force in Germany. Cyclists in particular get away well. The punishments for drivers are getting tougher.

  • New traffic regulations will apply from April 28th .
  • Above all, the safety of cyclists is to be improved with the new rules - there is a heavy penalty for drivers
  • What is changing and what are the penalties for violations according to the new 2020 catalog of fines

Frankfurt - In February 2020, new rules for road traffic regulations (StVO) and higher fines for traffic offenders were passed . The changes will come into effect on Tuesday (April 28th, 2020). In addition to increased fines for violations in road traffic, the regulations in the 2020 catalog of fines should above all increase the safety of cyclists.

"With the regulations, the legislator does justice to the growing importance of bicycles ," says Wolfgang Herda, traffic expert at ADAC Hessen-Thüringen, summarizing the intention behind the changes. The number of road users on bikes is increasing steadily, especially in cities.

Fines catalog 2020: These regulations should better protect cyclists

  • The minimum lateral distance to cyclists when overtaking must be at least 1.5 meters in urban areas and at least 2 meters outside.

  • Turning to the right is only allowed at walking pace in urban areas
  • Instead of a parking ban as before, there is now also a ban on stopping on protective strips, bike paths and cycle paths
  • A dedicated green arrow sign is intended to enable cyclists to turn off at suitable points even when it is red.
  • There are bicycle zones introduced in which special consideration applies towards cyclists. Other road users can also be admitted. Attention: Only speed 30 is allowed here!
  • People older than seven years may also be transported on suitable bikes. The regulation is an adjustment due to the increasing spread of cargo and transport bicycles.

Bicycle-friendly regulations in the 2020 catalog of fines: those who park illegally on cycle paths face harsher penalties

One has to wait and see whether the changes will prove their worth in practice, according to the ADAC Hessen-Thüringen. So far, parking and stopping on bike paths has been a major problem. The police's bicycle squadron in Frankfurt is already massively fighting against illegal parking on bike paths *. Towing is carried out daily in the main metropolis.

Even if there is no car in the way, cycling in many German cities is anything but harmless. In Frankfurt there are some particularly dangerous corners for cyclists *.

However, with the new regulations , a hefty catalog of fines will come into force, which should counteract the whole. Parking on sidewalks and bicycle paths as well as keeping on protective strips is becoming more expensive. In the event of disabilities, 70 euros and one point are due in Flensburg

Fines catalog 2020: It will also be expensive for emergency lane drainers

In addition, the 2020 catalog of fines provides for significantly higher penalties for speed violators. According to this , there will be a one-month driving ban in the city from 21 km / h too much and outside the city from 26 km / h too much.

It gets really juicy for rescue alley drainers: If you hang onto emergency vehicles and drive through an emergency alley, you pay at least 240 euros and get two points and a month's driving ban.

In addition, some new traffic signs will appear on our streets from Tuesday (April 28th, 2020).
