The EU Commission wants to save significantly more CO2 by 2030 than the EU countries have previously planned. Climate protectors have long been calling for the federal government to follow suit. Chancellor Angela Merkel has now taken a position.

Berlin (dpa) - Chancellor Angela Merkel supports a significant increase in the EU climate protection target for 2030. They welcome proposals from the EU Commission to strive for a greenhouse gas reduction of 50 to 55 percent compared to 1990, said the CDU politician on Tuesday at the Petersberg Climate Dialogue. A target of 40 percent reduction currently applies.

Merkel said it was a long way to achieve climate neutrality in 2050. She therefore welcomed the EU's proposal for a more ambitious interim goal. This would require a "comprehensive package of measures" with investments in climate-friendly infrastructures and also "appropriate CO2 pricing". Merkel said that despite the Corona crisis, the task remains "with seriousness and passion" to implement the Paris Agreement on the climate protection agreement.

Officially, Germany has so far had no position on the new EU climate protection target. The Commission wants to set it by September, the schedule should be maintained despite the Corona crisis.

Germany already has a 55 percent target for 2030. What exactly an increase in the EU target would mean for the individual member states is a matter of negotiation - it could mean that Germany would have to raise its target again. The climate package that is currently being implemented is geared towards the 55 percent target.

Already last August Merkel had said that she could "very well support" the Dutch proposal to reduce greenhouse gases in the EU by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990.

Germany takes over the EU Council Presidency in the second year. In her podcast released last weekend, Merkel said that climate issues during the German Presidency would be "just as much on the agenda" as health issues.
