(CNN Spanish) - A riot in the Miguel Castro Castro prison in Peru leaves nine inmates dead and 67 wounded among inmates, prison officers and police officers.

The National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) reported in a statement that the incidents began on Monday when the prisoners, who carried sharp weapons and blunt objects, burned mattresses and managed to climb to the roofs "with the aim of preventing access by the forces of the order and thus escape massively ”.

According to the INPE, to reduce the inmates and regain control, 200 National Police personnel supported the prison security personnel. In addition, the Public Ministry was notified "to intervene within the framework of its competences, and guarantee that the actions for the restoration of order within the prison establishment are circumscribed within the margins of legality."

In the statement, the INPE indicated that, although "it understands the prison population's concern regarding the possible contagion of the coronavirus", it is in the stage of distributing biosecurity material and rapid tests to prevent the spread of the disease within penalties. In the case of this particular prison, the delivery of 5,864 masks, 2,000 Azithromycin and 682 rapid tests were arranged, which "will be rationalized according to the symptoms observed in the workers and the prison population." At the end of the agency, he asserted that he will be "inflexible" in the face of any act of indiscipline and urged the detainees to maintain "a peaceful coexistence."
