The New York Times reported that the development of a new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) vaccine at Oxford University in the United Kingdom is leading the world, and preliminary experiments have been successfully carried out on monkeys. Human experiments involving more than 6,000 people will be conducted before the end of next month. Millions of vaccines are produced.

Most research must start with small clinical trials of hundreds of people to prove that the vaccine is safe; but scientists at the Jenner Institute in Oxford University have gained a starting edge in research and development because of the foundation of the previous malaria vaccine. Their technology focuses on changing the genetic code of a virus, pretending to be a new coronavirus, and injecting it into the body to start an immune response. This is different from the weakened virus in general vaccines.

The National Institutes of Health's Rocky Mountain Laboratory injected six cynomolgus monkeys with a vaccine developed by the Oxford team last month, and then exposed them to the new coronavirus. Other monkeys were sick, but the vaccinated macaques were all healthy after 28 days.

Rhesus monkey immunity does not guarantee that the vaccine can provide the same level of protection for humans. But dozens of vaccine research projects are currently underway, and monkey experiments show that the Oxford University team is becoming the leader. Oxford scientists said that if it proves effective, the first batch of millions of doses of vaccines can be prepared by the end of September after emergency approval by the competent authorities.

Oxford is the first team to do large-scale experiments. Even if it fails, it will provide the government, fund donors, pharmaceutical companies and other scientists with relevant experience on the nature of the new coronavirus and immune system response. Paradoxically, the anti-epidemic efforts of various countries have gradually achieved results, and the mitigation of the epidemic situation may create obstacles to vaccine research and development.

Adrian Hill, director of the Jenner Institute and one of the five researchers involved in vaccine development, said: "We are the only people in China who hope that the increase in the number of new diagnoses can be maintained for a few more weeks in order to test the vaccine." If maintained Social distance or other epidemic prevention measures have continued to reduce the number of new infections in the UK. The Oxford experiment may not show that the vaccine can work.
