The construction work for the second trunk line is being pushed ahead despite the Corona crisis. But a suspicious find causes an interruption. At the weekend it could be uncomfortable for many people.

  • The conversion of Munich Central Station * is in full swing.
  • A suspicious find temporarily stops the measures
  • An aerial bomb may have been discovered - evacuation threatens on Sunday .

April 29 update: An evacuation in the middle of the corona crisis ? The responsible persons of the city of Munich have to deal with this scenario. As reported, employees of a specialist company found two “suspicious metal objects” during the exploratory work for the second trunk line at the level of the Laimer underpass . It may be World War II aerial bombs (see below).

Laim: Evacuation During Corona? The residents would expect that

If the suspicion is confirmed, around 2500 people would have to leave their homes on Sunday under strict infection protection rules. The "suspected case of a weapon discovery" was now an issue in the city council. Together with the Free State, they agreed not to carry out a possible defuse during the week , as this would require the main line to be blocked. According to the fire brigade, specialists will expose the objects that are at a distance of about ten meters at a depth of around two meters on Saturday from 7 a.m. At noon it is clear whether it is actually a weapon .

In this case, residents will be informed on Saturday by means of broadcasts and loudspeaker announcements . Those affected should then have left their apartments by 9:00 p.m. on Sunday . A challenge especially in Corona times. A bomb was recently defused in Bonn under similar circumstances:

A fire department spokesman emphasizes: People with symptoms of illness are accommodated in separate facilities. "Everyone has to wear mouth-nose protection." Anyone who can't go anywhere on Sunday will be brought to the Olympic Hall. Those who do not have a car will be taken there by bus.

Suspicious find in Laim causes interruption - is it a bomb?

Update from April 22nd: According to tz information, construction workers are said to have recently come across metal in the ground on a railroad track near Arnulfstrasse . The suspicion: an aerial bomb from the Second World War . In such cases, all residents in the vicinity are usually evacuated - not easy in corona times * ...

On request from tz, the Munich fire brigade confirmed that a "suspicious item" was found . A specialist company discovered it with a detector on a Deutsche Bahn construction site in Laim - the second main line is currently being built there. Such so-called ordnance probes are required by law.

"It is being investigated what exactly it is," said the fire department on Wednesday afternoon. According to a spokesman , the metal find could also be "an old sink or a bathtub" . This could only be determined by excavations - and for safety's sake you have to evacuate at least 2000 to 3000 people in the area . But in the middle of the corona crisis * the question arises: where to?

A spokeswoman for the second main line says: "We will clarify all further procedures with the Interior Ministry ." So far, however, it is still unclear when it comes to finding a solution to the situation. However, one does not assume that this would delay the completion of the second trunk route. Nevertheless: First there is a freeze on the site . And the find remains a mystery for now ...
