(CNN Spanish) - Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo reported in a conference call on Tuesday that the government will strengthen the official covid-19 prevention campaign.

According to Murillo, the government will strengthen awareness about hand washing as an effective measure to contain the virus and promote personal distance.

The government campaign will also promote the use of masks and will emphasize that they should be used by people with respiratory symptoms, health personnel and those who care for vulnerable people.

The government spokeswoman reported that written messages and radio and television announcements are being prepared on the subject.

The need for the use of masks and other protective equipment for health personnel is one of the main demands of the Nicaraguan Medical Association.

Through a statement released on April 23, the association demanded that the Ministry of Health guarantee all elements of biosecurity, as well as
training for its use, according to the guidelines of the World Health Organization.

The epidemiologist Leonel Argüello, member of the multidisciplinary scientific committee, considers that any measure aimed at preventing the spread of the virus should
be welcomed and accepted by the population.

Argüello recommends "follow the five basic recommendations: stay more than a meter away, do not touch your face, eyes, nose or mouth, do not wave
with hands, fists, knuckles or elbows, wash your hands with soap and water for more 40 seconds and stay home. "

Regarding social distancing, Arguello recommends avoiding any type of crowding, closing study centers and moving to distance education modalities,
as well as establishing a quarantine regime.

The capital's mayor's office, the Managua municipal markets corporation and the Ministry of Health began an information and disinfection campaign
on eight public markets in the city on Tuesday , as part of the actions directed by the government.

During the past day, 3 new positive cases of the virus were confirmed and a follow-up was started on all those suspected of having the disease.

According to the World Health Organization, in Nicaragua there are 13 cases of the virus and 3 deaths.

The lack of social distancing measures, transparency in case management, the inability to trace the origin of cases and the lack of screening tests are concerns raised by the director of PAHO in early April.
