Initialize social security

As we all get out of balance in quarantine, one thing is becoming more and more obvious: the Day of Atonement of Neglect Policy has come and the socio-economic concept has collapsed.

Failure to cry: A social safety net that fails to save underprivileged families and families at risk with other problems; An education system that did not progress into the 21st century; A working world that did not develop the skills required of all employees in this century; A housing shortage that threatens the roof of hundreds of thousands more than ever; A diluted and shaky health system. These were all written on the wall before the corona.

But the concept has ruled not only in Israel, but in many Western countries, for three decades. And so, here, too, governments of the right and left believed that the state should shrink and shrink. The approach was spot-on. cosmetics. But now the dire consequences are beating world-class. Suddenly everyone sees as irreplaceable a strong national health system, without which we will all sooner or later crash. In all countries there are adults and children who need to be cared for, dismissed who need to be addressed, and families with hunger that need to be fed. That is why countries such as the US and the UK, which for years have cut social budgets, are now investing huge sums in civilian and business aid packages.

The fact that the Day of Atonement of social neglect is global is a cause for hope. When the distress is clear and tangible in so many countries, it is much more difficult to deny and close your eyes.

If all over the world realize that the concept has collapsed, Israel must also change direction, in the current crisis and beyond. The new government should take responsibility for social infrastructure for us and for future generations. First of all, run the business, budget and find sources of funding, even at the cost of raising taxes for those who have more.

We will need to invest to rebuild the health system, to advance education and to re-weave a social safety net. I wish there was another panacea that would give us social security. There is no such one. Within a decade, we could be in a completely different place in all the metrics, but in order for that to happen, changes in the hundreds and possibly thousands of government programs, laws, budget clauses, procedures need to be made. People need to know how to manage it differently. A task that is not simple, but committed to reality.

The Corona crisis illustrates to all of us that social security is just as important as military security. And if so, what are the options? You can continue to cut down on social services. You can't change anything. And one can also be rehabilitated. What do you choose?

So true, we are also in an economic crisis, and that automatically makes us think that the belt needs to be tightened. But it would be a public reaction to the recession, in the spirit of the collapse, and its price would be huge. Our economy is in good shape. Debt and inflation have dropped dramatically in recent decades. We have the opportunity to increase government spending to fix and strengthen social infrastructure. These, in return, will both protect and develop the economy and society.

There is real hope for a social restart here. Anyone who believes in our future here must mobilize and bring change, and build it field by field, plan and another. Casting brick-and-mortar laws and social security walls for all of us
