Affected by the New Coronary Pneumonia epidemic, Hong Kong Children's Hospital has banned visits, and a number of volunteers have been unable to enter the hospital to provide services. The sick children in the hospital were not only tortured by the epidemic, but also lost the only entertainment in the ward.

In order to provide comfort to sick children, Hong Kong Children's Hospital distributed gift packages for them, and specially made TV programs. They can see their old friends through the TV screen. The hospital expects that about 290 sick children will benefit each month. The two services will continue until June, and the related packages will continue to be discussed in the future.

In March this year, the Hong Kong Children's Hospital had a total of about 290 discharges (involving about 210 inpatients), including hematology and oncology, nephrology, other pediatric services and surgical wards. The average number of hospital stays was about 8 days.

Hong Kong Children's Hospital used to collaborate with different non-governmental organizations or volunteers to provide activities such as singing tours, storytelling and handicrafts for sick children. However, in response to the epidemic situation, the hospital has banned visits in January, and all volunteer services have also been suspended, including the deeply welcomed clown doctor, which has greatly reduced the entertainment of sick children.

Volunteer work matters

In addition to providing entertainment, a group of volunteers also made a significant contribution to the operation of the hospital, so that the sick children can relax before the injection or treatment. "For example, the game therapist should help children prepare for MRI (magnetic resonance), which will be used in the game room. The props will be rehearsed once with the children ... I hope that I will be more accustomed to it during the course of treatment.

Weekly distribution of gift packs

Zhang Jiafeng, the manager of the pediatric ward, said that at present, most of the children staying in the hospital are long-term patients. The hospitalized children mainly come from oncology or nephrology, and there are also surgical children.

Since mid-February, the hospital will issue "children's magic bag" gift packs every Wednesday. There are four types of gift packages. Different toys, books, and handmade materials will be distributed according to the age, sex, and needs of the sick child. Lin Fengqiao, director of social work at the Patient Resource Center, said that about 1,000 gift packages have been made and more than 700 have been dispatched today.

Lin said that a 3 to 4 year old female child in the oncology department was "uncomfortable" just after receiving the treatment. To appease her emotions, the staff used the picture books in it to play with her.

Although it is not possible to visit the hospital, the hospital has compassionate arrangements and can arrange for a parent to accompany the sick child in the hospital. First TV show

In addition, for the first time, the Patient Resource Center has cooperated with non-governmental organizations to launch the "Children's Fun Channel" channel, which broadcasts TV programs specifically for sick children. The program has been broadcast on March 30, and sick children can turn on the TV on the bed to watch. Programs include clown performances, English classes, anti-epidemic theater, music therapy, etc.

Seven organizations have participated in the production, from preparation to launch in just four weeks. Some programs can be matched with the materials in the gift package to increase the interaction, such as handicraft, etc., and the sick children can also send letters or send short messages to volunteers. Volunteers responded to questions on the program. Lin Fengqiao said that most of the sick children were very satisfied with "Children's Fun Channel" and hoped to continue watching. "Children two and three years old are very happy when they see a clown doctor appear on TV."

"Revisit the program" in the future

Lin Fengqiao continued that the program is currently broadcast from Monday to Friday, and will be screened for one hour from 3 to 4 pm. It is expected that the program will be optimized in the next two weeks. Sick children can use the QR code to revisit the program.

Babe, a sick child in hospital, said that recently volunteers failed to go to the hospital to accompany them and felt dull and unhappy. She said frankly that they would see them again on the current program. (Provided by Hong Kong Children's Hospital)
