Coronavirus: Brussels organizes a global telethon to finance a vaccine

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hopes to raise 7.5 billion euros.


Governments, philanthropists, business leaders and celebrities are invited to participate in a global fundraiser organized on Monday May 4 in Brussels for the search for a vaccine and treatments against the new coronavirus.

Organizer of this " online marathon ", the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen hopes to raise 7.5 billion euros, or 8 billion dollars, announced her collaborators. These will be promises and commitments. But it will only be a " kick-off ", because " much more money will be needed ", warn his services.

Ursula von der Leyen is supported by the foundation of Bill and Melinda Gates, who will play an important role in this fundraising. The billionaire and American philanthropist pleads for a general mobilization of caregivers, researchers and government officials.

The President of the Commission multiplies the calls to try to convince world leaders that unity is strength in the face of this pandemic. " She spends a lot of time on the phone, " said her staff. But it is not easy with US President Donald Trump. " We have good discussions with the White House, but they are not on board, " admitted a European official.

" Defeating the coronavirus requires a global response and sustained action on many fronts, " says Ursula von der Leyen. We have to develop a vaccine, produce it and deploy it in all corners of the world. And we must make it available at affordable prices , ”she pleads.

A vaccine is " our best collective chance of defeating the virus, " she says. Ursula von der Leyen wanted it developed for the fall.

Of the 7.5 billion euros expected, 4 billion is for the development of a vaccine, 2 for treatments and 1.5 for the manufacture of tests, the Commission said.
