Mayor Josef Schwaiger († 90) died. He left his mark on Hohenbrunn.

Mayor Josef Schwaiger († 90) died. He left his mark on Hohenbrunn.

Hohenbrunn - “Politics should always be based on Christian beliefs. Even future generations should develop willingness for the community and put aside selfishness. ”Josef Schwaiger always followed this principle when he led the fortunes of the Hohenbrunn community for 22 years. Now the former mayor has passed away at the age of 90.

He must be buried in silence, although many people would surely pay his last respects. No matter who is asked: you all speak very benevolently of Schwaiger. "He got a lot going," says Mayor Stefan Straßmair (CSU). These included the first municipal kindergartens, but also the fire station and waterworks. "Above all, Josef Schweiger was also a personality who was very popular with his pleasant, friendly and binding nature, among the citizens and in local clubs as well as as a councilor for his employees," said the incumbent councilor about his predecessor. Benno Maier sen too. (CSU), who has been a member of the local council since 1978, praises: "He was a mayor with body and soul who was always open to his citizens."

Schwaiger came to Hohenbrunn in 1954

Schwaiger has served the community for decades. Born in Heldenstein (Mühldorf am Inn district) came to Hohenbrunn in 1954 to take on the position of managing director. Schwaiger's boss was Mayor Carl Steinmeier, who had held this office since 1948 and died in February 1972 after a long illness. Thereupon Schwaiger was nominated by the CSU and free voters as a candidate for mayor - and also voted by the population. In the same year he took over the chair of the Zweckverband München-Südost. During his tenure, the fountain V and thus the first Hohenbrunn drinking water fountain was set in the Höhenkirchner forest. And much more was part of Schwaiger's era.

Community archivist Elisabeth Schmid lists the “legendary carnival balls in the Muna casino” and the summer concerts on the Muna site. Schwaiger was not only enthusiastic about music, but could also play the piano. Honorary citizen Leonhard Sigl sen., Who was CSU parish council between 1966 and 2002, remembers: "The green, white and blue parish flag was introduced under Josef Schwaiger, and the passionate musician also owes our church concerts in St. Stephanus."

Schwaiger awarded the town council with a citizen medal

Munich's Mercury described it as a “bang” in 1994 when Schwaiger resigned from the mayor's office prematurely for health reasons. As a thank you for his services, the municipal council granted him the title of "former mayor", and he was also awarded the citizens' medal. His successor Franz Zannoth (independent, 1994-2006) found an “ordered (council) house”. The two had known each other since the summer of 1974, when Zannoth had applied to the Munich-Southeast Association. Schwaiger was the chairman of the association Zannoth for twenty years. “Together we made the association what it is today. It could only be achieved because he was always open to my ideas. ”In many conversations it was Schwaiger who persuaded him to succeed him. "Josef Schwaiger is one of the few that I can call an honest and sincere companion from all the time."

Benno Maier's summary of Schwaiger's achievements as mayor: "He has moved a lot and always has the well-being of his community in mind." Many will keep this in mind, even though things have become quiet around the old mayor in the past. Hohenbrunn owes a lot to Schwaiger.
