The Spanish forms a consortium with CICSA, other of Carlos Slim's construction companies

The FCC group has fully entered into the construction of the Mexican railway project of the Maya Train , planned in the Yucatan peninsula and valued in its entirety at more than 6,000 million euros. The Spanish company controlled by magnate Carlos Slim has taken the second section of the infrastructure, with 235 kilometers, in consortium with another of the construction companies of the Mexican businessman, CICSA .

The failure occurred this afternoon, Spanish time, by Fonatur, the body that oversees the project. The FCC and CICSA offer reaches 18,553 million pesos (about 705 million euros), being the fourth cheapest, a section headed by the also Spanish Rubau. It has been the technical score that has driven the Slim consortium to take over the road segment that goes from Escárcega to Calkiní, in the State of Campeche.

That of FCC and CICSA has been the best rated proposal in the segments of quality of work, capacity of the bidder, experience and specialty, fulfillment of contracts and national content of the workforce.

The Administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador has decided to continue with his star investment in infrastructure despite the current world crisis. The Government estimates that public investment will serve as a lever to get out of it, so much so that work on this new section awarded is scheduled to begin on May 12 .

Slim pulls the FCC experience

Carso Infraestructura y Construcción (CICSA) is one of the Mexican construction companies that make up the Carso Group. Its alliance with FCC for the execution of the Maya Train leaves far behind the agreement that FCC and its first shareholder, Carlos Slim, signed in June 2015 so that both companies, FCC Construcción and Carso Infraestructuras, would be 50% in works throughout the American continent with the exception of the Mexican market, the country of origin of the businessman.

In this case, Slim has needed FCC's experience in railway projects to have options, as has been demonstrated, in what is the greatest work of the moment on the other side of the Atlantic.

Acciona and Comsa join the contest

Awarded the first two sections, the Spanish construction is already bidding for the third. They repeat references such as FCC, Sacyr, Azvi, Copasa and Rubau . And the presence of Acciona and the Catalan Comsa is a novelty .

For this third segment of the work, of 172 kilometers between Calkiní (Campeche) and Izamal (Yucatan), 16 international consortiums are fighting. Comsa's proposal in association with the Mexican Caabsa is, for the moment, the best in the economic section . In addition to Spanish companies, there are large Chinese and Mexican rivals, such as China Railway and ICA, respectively.
