The Tel Aviv-Jaffa municipality has decided to cease operations of the Tel Ophen system in the city starting this August. Intriguingly, the much less used and higher cost auto-tel service will not be canceled.

The reason for the discontinuation of service, according to the municipality, is the gradual decline in use in recent years, due to the development of the bicycle and electric and cooperative scooters market. The array operation contract was due to expire in January 2021, and in view of the changes in scope, it was decided to advance the termination of the contract by several months. It is also likely that the Corona period and traffic restrictions did not contribute to demand either.

The private bicycle and scooter rental projects in the city, which offer thousands of vehicles for every driver, will continue to follow the guidelines and rules set by the municipality. At the same time, the municipality is investigating a framework for cooperative electric bicycle activities that will allow for longer distances in Gush Dan.

The municipal bicycle rental system was established in 2011 and has received high usage and great sympathy among Tel Aviv and residents who came to the city. The establishment of the "Tel Ophen" system was part of the urban vision of turning the bicycle into a major transport vehicle in the city. According to surveys conducted by the municipality, in the past decade the volume of bicycles used in the city has doubled and about 65,000 residents use bicycles and scooters as a major means of transport.

Tel Aviv itself has made up to 14 million trips by thousands of regular subscribers and casual riders to date. Throughout the city there were about 186 docking stations with over 1860 bicycles and for several years there were also several docking stations in Ramat Gan and Givatayim.

In 2020, the municipality plans to pave another 20 km of bicycle paths throughout the city.
