It is a nice specimen of rhizostoma pulmo: a small rhizostoma jellyfish which graciously ascends a venetian canal. The image, filmed last week by a zoologist, enchanted social networks. What a beautiful symbol of nature taking over when millions of tourists desert the city. Except ... the reality is a little more complex: the same zoologist explains that this presence is nothing extraordinary because the jellyfish are regulars in the lagoon but that we do not see them in normal times, because of the thousands of boats that cloud the water of the canals.
However, almost no one relayed this clarification. Because it does not fit with the ecological doxa which sees in man the fundamental enemy of the planet and of wild life.
