Washington (dpa) - Coordinator of the White House Corona Working Group, Deborah Birx, has expressed concern about recent protests in Michigan against corona restrictions - unlike US President Donald Trump.
For her personally, the protests are highly worrying about the risk of infection, Birx told Fox News on Sunday. Given the fact that the demonstrators were close together in large numbers without masks, she explained that if these people now infected their grandparents at home and had an unfortunate end to an illness, they would not forgive themselves for their whole lives. Birx warned: "We have to protect each other, even if we express our dissatisfaction."
On Thursday, during a protest against everyday restrictions due to the corona pandemic in the US state of Michigan, protesters entered the local parliament - some of them armed. Michigan is one of the United States where private individuals are allowed to carry firearms openly, including in the Parliament building. Several hundred people gathered in the demonstration in the entrance area of the building and called for an end to the state of emergency.
Trump had expressed support for the demonstrators in Michigan. "These are very good people, but they are angry," Trump wrote on Twitter on Friday. "They want their lives back, in a safe way." The president called on Michigan's governor, Gretchen Whitmer, to speak to the protesters.
Whitmer told CNN on Sunday that it would continue to do everything possible to protect people in Michigan from the virus, regardless of tweets and surveys. The number of protesters is low, the vast majority of people in Michigan behaved correctly. The democrat emphasized that it was crucial to listen to experts in this pandemic.
