Holzkirchen - Masked is the order of the day: since last week in Bavaria, the mask has been mandatory on buses, trains and when shopping. When visiting the Holzkirchner town hall and the green market, mouth and nose must be covered. But what to do if you can hardly get the masks? The market town has developed a project for this and has set up a central collection point for self-made masks in front of the town hall.

Many citizens who can sew community masks and want to help have recently contacted the town hall. You can now throw your masks directly into a specially provided container at the entrance to the town hall. “The masks are then sorted and distributed to people or institutions,” says Eva-Maria Schmitz from the site promotion. For example, socially needy or elderly people as well as nursing staff and assistants in retirement homes and aid organizations are equipped. If a surplus ends up in the collection box, the masks will be handed in for a donation during the Green Market on Saturday and Wednesday.

The town hall has also brought some clubs on board for the campaign. The Emergency Medicine Holzkirchen and Environment Association, the Boy Scouts, the Association for Street Children in Senegal, the Exchange Time and the TuS Holzkirchen help. These five clubs will distribute the face mask. Other associations support the administration by promoting the campaign and asking their members to sew community masks. "We are very happy that the clubs are participating so hard," says Schmitz. The municipal building yard had helped by quickly making a suitable dispenser for the masks.

The self-made community masks catch at least part of the saliva that is distributed in the air when speaking. In addition, people who wear a mask are less likely to touch their faces. However, mouth and nose protection also makes sense against the background that not every sick person knows that he is infected with the coronavirus. Because even those who have no symptoms themselves can pass the pathogen on to others.
