Some 316 mayors of Ile-de-France, including that of Paris Anne Hidalgo, signed a letter published by La Tribune and addressed to Emmanuel Macron to request the postponement of the start of the school year beyond May 11.

"We solemnly ask you that the State ensure that all the sanitary conditions are met to allow the children to return to school, they write, and not to place legal, political responsibility on the mayors and moral of the reopening of schools, writes the association of mayors of Ile-de-France. We ask your government to clearly prioritize the children who can / will have to go back to school in Île-de-France, taking into account the family context of each child and by following an imperative of justice and equity ”.

The City of Paris in particular was planning to reserve, at least initially, access to school for a "priority audience", that is to say children of parents of certain professions and dropouts.

The signatories continue: “You said that it was necessary to reopen the schools, to reduce social and territorial inequalities. […] But we learn, ten days before the date of reopening of the schools, that it would be up to the mayors to decide on the reopening of the schools, and to the parents to decide on the return to the path of their children's classes. That the timetable for the gradual resumption of class levels, initially announced, is no longer valid, with regard to GS, CP and CM2. And that we will not know until May 7, on the eve of a three-day weekend before the start of the new school year, if our departments are officially classified in the red zone. Finally, many are those who do not yet have information on the teachers who would be available for our schools, on the number of animators who may be available for extracurricular activities, or even the number of pupils to welcome. All this cannot be improvised overnight ”.
