Wolfratshausen - Classes are currently taking place at the Wolfratshausen Music School. 80 percent of the hours can be held on schedule.

Wolfratshausen: virtual music lessons

After the lockdown due to the corona pandemic, it became apparent that it would not be a break from classes until after Easter. Manfred Heller, head of the Wolfratshaus music school, recalls: “We were shocked. Then hope for a quick end to the crisis. ”

Music school leaders are confident about the future

Today it is clear that normalcy will not return anytime soon. But Heller is confident about the future. Because he and his teaching staff reacted quickly and developed and implemented digital concepts for virtual teaching. Around 80 percent of the lessons are now back on schedule. "We are now coming to our students' living rooms."

30 to 45 minutes of one-to-one video lessons

One-to-one tuition via video transmission takes 30 to 45 minutes. Heller teaches himself on the laptop and knows that the children are ready on time. "It's always exciting to see how it goes." Because virtual lessons require discipline and concentration. The children often practiced where the WiFi connection is, for example in the kitchen.

"The sibling screams, the phone rings," reports Heller. In addition, the network supply is temporarily overloaded. "Sometimes the transmission runs crystal clear, sometimes it is slowed down again." But it works. "It is so important for the learning process to stay tuned," says Heller.

New projects are continuously shown on the homepage of the music school. Creativity is required in the crisis. For example, 40 children of the Yoshihisa Kinoshita children's choir recorded gossip sequences from home. A small music film was cut from it. The choir lessons are now also continuing via the zoom conference.

Corona crisis requires creativity

At the same time, all choir members are added in single images. Everyone sings with the microphone switched off and is spontaneously asked to sing a verse audibly for everyone in solo. "Our choir children are used to this, because they also have to sing individual stanzas during live lessons," explains Heller. The Wolfratshausen Music School does not have any financial or existential problems. The parents are enthusiastic and keep the music school in line.

Heller and his music school team are already planning the exit strategy. "As soon as the measures are relaxed, we could start the individual lessons again," he announces. Distance control and hygiene are guaranteed at school.

In the large concert hall, for example, ten music students could be taught weekly with a two-meter distance. Heller can imagine a plexiglass partition for individual lessons with the wind musicians.

Digital media have worked well

The Wolfratshaus music school has come to terms with the crisis. The digital media have proven their worth. But that's how Manfred Heller sees it too: music is and remains a shared experience.

Music lessons are also being continued digitally in Geretsried. The headmistress reports on how this works in an interview. And a concert was recently broadcast live on the Internet from the Kulturbühne Hinterhalt. The response was huge.
