Guayas, the focus of the virus in Ecuador 4:42

(CNN Spanish) - Through a virtual press conference, the Mayor of Quito, Jorge Yunda, reported this Sunday that the Ecuadorian capital will remain at a "red light", that is, with all the mobility restrictions established by the government and included in the state of emergency decree and the curfew issued on March 16. "We have serious suspicions that our city is not out of danger," said Yunda.

The mayor indicated that 75% of people infected with coronavirus continue to circulate on the streets and that they have falsified personal information to avoid being contacted, putting other citizens at risk.

He insisted that in Quito there is a need for more public awareness, that there are not yet enough screening tests and that the health infrastructure is not ready for an increase in infections. "We will not throw our city off the cliff," he insisted.

Yunda also reported that 10 bodies of people who have died on public roads or in their homes allegedly by covid-19 have been raised. He added that May 26 is a crucial day since enough isolation days will be fulfilled to analyze if the contagion curve begins to fall. He assured that it will be an estimated time according to the experiences of other countries to know if the peak of infections has been reached. "We have not reached the highest peak," Yunda emphasized.

The mayor of Quito admitted that the quarantine "has not been 100% successful" and that there are more than 300,000 vehicles circulating in the city due to the obtaining of a large number of safe passages or circulation permits.

Finally, the mayor of the Ecuadorian capital said that "it is not possible to predict what will happen", but that the gradual revival of the city will be according to technical parameters and adequate analysis so as not to put the population at risk. He spoke of the possibility of promoting "pilot" projects to reopen the productive sector with biosecurity measures and seek the support of international financing organizations to sustain the economy.

Since Monday, by government order, the traffic light system in Ecuador with the colors red, yellow and green governs, which will imply the reopening of certain productive activities according to the number of infections, sanitary infrastructure, the ability to carry out detection tests and the social behavior. However, according to the Emergency Operations Committee almost the entire country will start with a red light according to the information provided by the municipalities until this Sunday. Of the 221 cantons in the country, 204 have expressed keeping the traffic light red. Those who do not report it, according to the government, will be considered to be still in red as well.
