Unprecedented statement: King of the Netherlands William Alexander acknowledged the speech with indifference and carelessness of Queen Wilhelmina, his great grandmother, to the fate of Dutch Jews during the Holocaust, the JTA website reports.

He said this yesterday (Monday) during the King's annual speech at the Amsterdam National Memorial Ceremony for Dutch victims of armed clashes during and after World War II.

Queen Wilhelmina, who served from 1890 to 1948, referred to the persecution of the Jews only three times out of 48 radio speeches heard during her exile in Britain.

"Humans felt abandoned, abandoned and unsupported, not even in words," said Willem-Alexander at the ceremony. "Neither is my great grandmother, despite her staunch opposition to the Nazis. It's something that doesn't let me down."

In January, Prime Minister Mark Rotta apologized for the government's failing concern and treatment of Jews at the time. His apology was the first apology of an incumbent Dutch Prime Minister, who came after repeated requests from members of the Jewish community in the country.

In the Netherlands there was a fierce resistance movement to the Nazi occupation and about 5,778 Righteous Among the Nations, non-Jews who saved Jewish lives in the Holocaust. However, the Nazis and local collaborators murdered 75% of the Jewish population of some 140,000 - the highest death rate in Western Europe occupied by the Nazis.
