There are just 50 take-offs and landings per day at Munich Airport in corona times. The Flughafen München Gesellschaft (FMG) is using this fast standstill to renovate the southern runway. The starting shot was fired on Monday.
Erding - For the next three weeks, all air traffic will be handled via the north runway. "For the first time since the airport was commissioned in 1992, necessary repair work, which can normally only be carried out on a runway during the night, takes place during the day," reports FMG. As part of the upcoming work on the 240,000 square meter South Runway, 180 square meters of concrete are to be replaced. Other measures include the renewal of cable systems for lighting systems on the runway, general maintenance work on the lighting and joint renovation on the runway.
Aircraft taxiing will still be possible in the southern runway area. This is the only way to reach the freight and maintenance area. The fire station south remains occupied. In this way, the FMG wants to ensure that the train can be reopened at short notice should a special circumstance make it necessary, says an FMG spokesman. ham
