Coronavirus: UK has more deaths than Italy, with more than 30,000 dead

2020-05-05T15:33:18.790Z

If we stick to the number of deaths in absolute value, the United Kingdom is now the most affected European country before Italy.

The British would probably have liked to do without this first. This Tuesday, the United Kingdom became the first country in Europe to exceed the 30,000 deaths linked to the new coronavirus, according to official statistics. These figures make it the second country most affected by the pandemic in the world after the United States if we stick to the only number of deaths in absolute value.

The weekly figures of the various regional statistical agencies of the country show a balance sheet of 32,313 deaths of which Covid-19 is the suspected cause indicated on the death certificate, ie a figure higher than in Italy (29,079 deaths on Monday). The current toll is probably much heavier because these figures relate to deaths until April 24 for England (28,272), Wales (1,376) and Northern Ireland (393), and up to to April 26 for Scotland (2,272).

Nick Strippe, an analyst at the National Bureau of Statistics (ONS), however cautioned against comparisons with other countries due to different calculation methods. “They are very difficult to do and they will be for some time to come. Be very careful with this type of comparison, "he argued on Twitter.

Lots of comment about the UK having the highest death toll in Europe. International comparisons are incredibly difficult to do and will be for some time to come.

UK death registrations data is the fastest, most frequent and most in depth than any other stats agency.

The NSO also said on Tuesday that more than 6,000 people died of coronavirus in three weeks in England in retirement homes. In total, 6,391 deaths linked to the virus were recorded by retirement homes from April 10 to May 1, of which 2,044 occurred the last week of April according to these statistics which relate only to England.

A "dramatic situation" in retirement homes

Until recently, the government only announced hospital deaths from people with coronavirus. Accused of minimizing the impact of the pandemic, he now includes in his daily reports the deaths in retirement homes. According to the latest assessment communicated by the Ministry of Health, the coronavirus had killed 28,734 people in total on Monday, or 3,579 fewer deaths compared to the ONS figures.

The death toll is slowly decreasing, which is "reassuring," said Nick Strippe, an analyst at the ONS, interviewed by the BBC. He noted, however, that hospitals have about 75% more deaths than usual at this time of year.

"The situation in retirement homes is even more dramatic than that," he said. "Nearly four times more deaths than we expected at this time of year were recorded in the past week, about 280% more deaths in retirement homes than the average for in the past five years, and that number is increasing. Regarding these deaths, "35% mentioned the Covid on the death certificate," he said. In total, according to the NSO, 8,828 people died of Covid-19 disease outside the hospital between the start of the epidemic and April 24 in England and Wales.
