  • The number of corona infections in the Dachau district has stagnated.
  • The medical staff is well equipped and around 2000 people are tested for the virus every week.
  • Doctors prefer to wait and see whether everything is good.

Dachau - The days around Easter will be Dr. Hans Ulrich Braun, internist and chairman of the Dachau medical district association, don't forget so quickly. In these days, the corona wave hit Dachau, 80 new infections per day were counted. "There were more and more," Braun recalls these days. Because this also pushed the Dachau hospital to its limits, at the behest of the Ministry of Health, a hotel in Dachau-Ost was quickly converted into an emergency hospital for expensive money. In mid-April, Health Minister Melanie Huml officially put the facility responsible for four counties into operation.

In fact, the opening date was the last time that people were in the emergency hospital. "Thank God," says Dr. Christian Günzel added. The doctor, who normally works at the Dachau MVZ, has been a so-called medical doctor for the district since April: He advises the district office, takes care of the organization of outpatient care structures in Corona times and - above all - is currently the "man of numbers". Because: Günzel has introduced a test statistic that combines all tests of the health department, the hospital and the doctor's offices. At the beginning of the crisis, especially in the days around Easter called "peak" by Braun, this was not yet possible: "We all worked on the attack, reacted and learned from week to week," says Wolfgang Reichelt from the district office Time. In the meantime, the district of Dachau, with its case numbers, was “once in the top ten across Bavaria”.

Coronavirus in Dachau: "The situation has calmed down a lot"

Well, says Günzel, "the situation has calmed down very much, it looks good", which is why he and his colleagues are slowly starting to recap the past few weeks. According to Günzel and Braun, Dachau did well, with 883 proven infections and mostly mild illnesses, the district had so far come through the crisis well. Sure, Günzel says, there was "a phase of exponential growth" of new infections, whereupon the emergency hospital was created, but: "We just got the curve." The measures imposed by the state government "were very successful". The supply of medical staff is now also working well: According to the district office, there are "enough gloves and masks, we even have an abundance of disinfectants".

However, the doctors do not yet see each other on the Corona home stretch, on the contrary: "If we do not remain careful, it could quickly escalate again," said Braun. That is why one is also cautious about the future of the empty emergency hospital in Dachau-Ost. "A four-figure sum weekly" costs the maintenance of the facility according to the district office; but Dr. Thomas Weiler, the responsible medical director in the area of the integrated control center, still believes the previous strategy - that is, to provide the hotel as an emergency hospital - is the right one: "If the worst comes to the worst, we can still respond quickly".

Corona in the Dachau district: Nobody knows how many people were infected

Because there is still a big problem: Nobody knows how many people in the district really had Corona. In 883 cases, medical doctor Braun assumes that "the number of unreported cases is five to ten times as high". For this reason, test statistician Günzel explains, “the test strategy” is now being gradually changed: If only suspected cases of Covid 19 were tested six weeks ago, people who have only cold symptoms are now being given a test. Günzel calculates 2000 people are currently being tested per week in the district; for comparison: At the wedding of the outbreak, there were between 4000 and 5000 tests.

What Günzel and his colleagues need to emphasize in this context: Just go to the doctor and say: "I would like to know if I had Corona" does not work. "There is no general antibody test at the till," says Günzel. And even if you wanted to pay for the test yourself, he advised caution: "The result has no value, it is not reliable!"

People should go back to normal examinations

Instead, people should now go back to their doctor for their normal exams or seek help for any pain. At the Third Order Clinic in Munich, Braun reports, there are currently an unusually large number of appendiceal perforations. The reason: "People simply underestimated their abdominal pain."
