The bells of St. Johann in Irschenberg have not been rung since August 2017 because the church tower began to crumble. Since then, the renovation has been planned and started. Now the work is finally starting.

It was a long time before the renovation of the church tower of St. Johann Baptist in Irschenberg was tied down. And now it was almost too fast. Because before the work on the natural stone can start, the scaffolding, which has been securing the damaged tower since November 2017 and protecting it from rain and snow, must be supplemented by an external staircase. But then you can start. The start is this Thursday, says Tadeusz Kmiec-Forstner.

The pastor and head of the Irschenberg parish association is happy that the time of waiting is over: "Finally the work begins." The bidder talks would have taken place before Easter. The contract was awarded to a company from Munich that knew about the renovation of natural stones.

As reported, the church tower is made of tuff, and this has the property that it easily absorbs moisture and releases it again. The problem: The joints do not take part in the long run. The result: grout and stones fell, which initially led to the immediate closure of the area.

Irradiation at the tower

The damaged joints must now be replaced. To do this, water is first irradiated - first with cold, then with warm. "The whole tower is rinsed off," explains Pastor Tadeusz. Then you can assess the extent of the damage and see what is still in order from the building fabric. At the same time, the beams and pedestals inside the tower are examined by a carpenter and replaced if necessary.

The cost of this is estimated at 250,000 euros - 130,000 for natural stone renovation and 120,000 for woodwork. There are also works in the sacristy and the renovation of the exterior plaster. This brings together a total of 600,000 to 700,000 euros, to which the parish must make its contribution.

Negotiation costs

How high that is, is a matter of negotiation, says the parish association leader. "Usually the Ordinariate takes over 70 percent and the Parish 30 percent." But this is difficult to shoulder because the parish has only just been built. “We are broke at 30 percent,” says the minister. And you can't get involved with your own contribution. "This work requires trained people." However, it is important that the renovation can now begin. "Then we'll see."
