The United Nations Human Rights Office has warned that overcrowded prisons with poor health care in the United States and Latin America and the outbreak of the Corona virus in local prisons are a "source of grave concern".
"In many Latin American countries there is a really dangerous congestion," office spokesman Robert Colville said in a briefing in Geneva, noting that it is a chronic problem across the continent and in some cases it can be fatal.
In some places, Colville added, congestion rates are as high as 500 percent, and new detention centers set up in regions such as Peru for violators of anti-Corona measures have contributed to the problem.
In some prison cases, Colville said, fear of infection has led to riots and the deaths of dozens of prisoners in Latin America in recent weeks, calling for an immediate and independent investigation into these incidents.
The number of prisoners in the United States alone is 2.3 million.
