"Containment is death", lamented Mgr Mario Alvares, bishop of Choco, one of the poorest regions of Colombia. He wanted to emphasize the difficulties encountered by informal workers in his region. Confinement means a sudden cessation of income for fragile populations, without savings or any other means of subsistence than the income generated by their daily activity. The importance of informal work in most South American countries gives containment measures a particularly destructive and rapid effect, especially since this form of activity has increased in the subcontinent in recent years, according to the Organization. International Labor Organization (ILO), up to 23% in 2018. With important nuances: if in Chile, informal work concerned 17% of the population, this rate was 62% among Bolivians in 2018. The first effect of Covid-19 is therefore not mortality but the deterioration of the economic situation
