The Knesset plenary (Wednesday) debated amending the Basic Law: The government, nicknamed "Rotary Law," according to which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Blue and White Chairman Benny Gantz could serve as prime ministers, each in turn, as part of a private government. Join the live show

The "Law of Rotation" includes a host of far-reaching changes and additions to the Government Basic Law. It details the rotational government structure, defined as a private government in which a number of ministers and deputy ministers are equal to the two blocs that make up the coalition, and sets out the process of inaugurating the prime minister and the alternate prime minister, the dates of their exchanges and the way the government is run. Alongside it, there is another bill designed to allow for amendments to the Party Financing Law, so that the Eretz Israel faction that joins the coalition can receive ongoing funding for its activities.

The Knesset members are debating the matter in the plenary hall from early in the morning, and at 16:00 the votes for the final approval of the law will begin on second and third reading. Voting is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., and will continue for hours. In total, about 1,000 electronic votes are expected and another 16 are voting. The Knesset expects the votes to end only at noon tomorrow.

After the law is finally approved, 61 MKs will have to sign a request from the state president to impose the government on Benjamin Netanyahu.
