Macron meets representatives of the world of culture before announcing measures

2020-05-06T09:18:25.346Z

A few days before the deconfinement, the President of the Republic heard, by videoconference, the complaints of twelve representatives of a sector completely stopped for two months.

The growls of artists and representatives of the world of culture will not go unanswered. This is, at least, the promise made by Emmanuel Macron on Saturday May 2 after discovering a platform signed by dozens of actors, comedians, directors and figures from the community demanding concrete actions in favor of creation and show. Since the start of confinement, everything has stopped: concert halls, opera houses and theaters are closed, museums, exhibition galleries, conservatories, monuments, libraries, archives are closed. Almost all of the summer festivals and events have been canceled, leaving the public, as well as thousands of intermittent workers, from the cities. Filming has been suspended, the recording has been interrupted; even the releases of books, records, films have been postponed to better days.

In their published column Le Monde , Catherine Deneuve, Jean Dujardin, Clara Luciani, Oxmo Puccino or Léa Seydoux, launched an appeal to the President of the Republic, urging him to act in order to repair "this oversight of art and Culture". They criticize in particular the Ministry of Culture Franck Riester for the lack of precision in the measures put in place to help the sector, which "supports 1.3 million people" . " To the artists who have spoken, I mean that I can hear them. The State will continue to support them, protect the most fragile, support creation. The future cannot be invented without your imagination, ”wrote the head of state, in a tweet posted Saturday afternoon.

To put out the fire, Emmanuel Macron therefore chose to " receive " twelve artists by videoconference on Wednesday morning. Six men, six women, said the Elysée Tuesday evening, including the singer Catherine Ringer or the conductor Sébastien Daucé. The objective? " Discuss the impact of the crisis on their businesses, on the accompanying measures to better protect them and support the structures that produce and disseminate them, " said those close to the President of the Republic. Emmanuel Macron wants to " reinvent the place of culture in our country ", as quickly as possible, " despite the constraints and uncertainty imposed by covid19 ".

At the end of this meeting, announcements, the " first " concerning the culture sector specifies the presidency of the Republic, are expected. The ministers concerned - Franck Riester for Culture, but also, it seems, Bruno Le Maire for the Economy and Muriel Pénicaud for Work - must make a point in the courtyard of the Élysée Palace. Among the most predictable announcements, in particular, measures to relax the rules for calculating the hours of intermittent workers, a non-exhaustive list of sites, museums and monuments that may reopen after May 11 (and under what conditions) or announcements on events that may be organized in the future. Many are wondering, for example, about the continuation, in one form or another, of the Fête de la Musique on June 21.
