After the bankruptcy in September 2019, the German Thomas Cook had canceled all the package tours booked. Customers who have already paid travel expenses can now recover them online.
Berlin (dpa) - Customers of the insolvent travel provider Thomas Cook can now apply online for a compensation payment from the federal government for broken trips.
"For reasons of protection of legitimate expectations, we will voluntarily compensate customers who have suffered damage the difference between their payments and what they have received back from others," promised Federal Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht (SPD).
The offer is aimed at customers who have booked a package tour with a German tour operator belonging to the Thomas Cook Group, Thomas Cook International AG or Tour Vital Touristik GmbH. You must submit receipts and indicate services already received from another party. Registrations will be accepted until November 15, 2020. The federal government warned that especially at the beginning there could be delays in processing due to heavy demand.
The German Thomas Cook, which was caught up in the bankruptcy of the British mother, filed for bankruptcy on September 25. The company had gradually canceled all booked trips, even if they had already been paid in full or in part.
In December, the federal government decided to reimburse package travelers affected that part of their expenses that neither Zurich insurance nor third parties compensate. However, it is a prerequisite that customers have previously reported their claims to the insolvency administrator and made them to the insurance company.
